Frequently Asked Questions
What's the connection between Psi Alpha, Psi Beta and Psi Chi?
Psi Alpha operates under Psi Beta, as Psi Beta is Psi Alpha’s fiscal sponsor. Psi Alpha provides an open a pathway for students to smoothly transition from Psi Alpha to Psi Beta, the national honor society for community colleges, once they are attending college.
Although Psi Alpha alumni will still need to meet their Psi Beta chapter requirements to join Psi Beta, by participating in Psi Alpha, these students will come to their Psi Beta chapter with more leadership experience.
Psi Chi, the psychology honor society at four-year universities and colleges, is Psi Beta’s older sister.
I want to join Psi Alpha but my college doesn't have a Psi Alpha chapter. What can I do?
The only way to become a Psi Alpha member is by qualifying for membership in a formally chartered Psi Alpha chapter. If your high school doesn’t have a Psi Alpha chapter, you have two options. First, begin a grass roots movement to start a Psi Alpha chapter at your high school. You must have a faculty member who is willing to serve as an advisor. Potential advisors must have be teaching a psychology class or closely related at your school.
For more information, see the new chapter application forms on this website. If you have further questions, you may also contact the Psi Alpha Vice-President for your region, or the Psi Alpha Executive Director (see Staff and Council directory).
How long does it take to charter a new chapter?
The founding advisor must facilitate completion of all the application forms. These forms are used as evidence that the high school is eligible and appropriately prepared to have a Psi Alpha chapter. Once the forms are submitted, all members of the National Council must review and approve them. Normally, it takes less than one semester to charter a new chapter, but sometimes it takes a little longer if incomplete forms are submitted or if the application fee is not submitted in a timely fashion.
Who can purchase Psi Alpha merchandise? Does one need to be a member?
The Psi Alpha store is still in production. Anyone can purchase Psi Alpha merchandise. This new policy makes it possible for proud relatives and family members to purchase Psi Alpha gifts for their Psi Alpha members. Anyone can buy Psi Alpha items for themselves or as a way to appreciate guest speakers, outstanding officers, well-deserving advisors, and others.
I lost my Psi Alpha membership certificate. What can I do?
Individual Psi Alpha members may replace a lost or damaged certificate, or a certificate with an incorrectly spelled name due to misspelled (or illegible) name on the registration form. Replacement certificates are $7 each including shipping and handling. Please see the Certificate Replacement page for instructions on how to submit your request.
